FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS on ISM DHANBAD

DISCLAIMER:
This FAQ is based on the queries i received from prospective students during 2007 admissions.
The answers are based on personal observations and thus may differ from ISM's opinion.

1.What kind of place is dhanbad??

=>
Most of us get apprehensive on hearing the name of bihar and jharkhand..
but this is just due to our baseless assumptions.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM IN LIVING IN DHANBAD..

Dhanbad is a perfectly safe place to live in...There are no kidnappings waiting to happen...

There are absolutely no EXTRA problems.........other then what all normal cities face..
The law n order is well maintained..

And especially, there is absolutely no problem in and around ism campus....u can roam freely 24 hrs in ism campus and even in dhanbad..

Me and my friends have been out of the campus @ 3-4 A.M. many a times...and haven’t encountered any problems yet.

So rest assured, u can live safely and happily in dhanbad and complete your college life ALIVE!!!...



2.ISM dhanbad what kind of college is it??

Why cant it become IIT??

=>
INDIAN SCHOOL OF MINES,DHANBAD IS ONE OF THE OLDEST INSTITUTIONS TO HAVE EXISTED IN INDIA,SETUP ON THE LINES OF ROYAL SCHOOL OF MINES, ENGLAND.

It was established in 1926.

BUT THE FACT of which very few are aware is that.........
IN THE YEAR 2000 ISM AND ROORKEE UNIV. WERE GIVEN THE STATUS OF AN IIT....ROORKEE ACCEPTED IT while "ISM REJECTED THE OFFER"....
this happened due to the pressure of the STRONG ISM ALUMNI.......

who were of the view that "changing the name of one's ALMA MATER is equivalent to changing the name of ONE'S MOTHER"...
and this feeling was conveyed to the authorities at that time...in almost the same format....

The great reason (besides the emotional one) was THE FACT THAT ISM IS A PIONEER INSTITUTE WHICH HAS EXISTED SINCE NOTHING CALLED IITs EXISTED ......
IT IS THE BEST SCHOOL IN ASIA FOR EARTH SCIENCES..

And thus considering This AWESOME REPUTATION at least in Earth Sciences, the idea of changing name was scrapped at that time.

At present nine different B Tech Branches, various dual degree courses, MBA and many M Tech & M.Sc Courses are offered here.

ISM’s name was last year changed to ISM University so as to better reflect this fact.

As of now there is no proposal out (yet), aimed at renaming ISM University to IIT Dhanbad.

As mentioned earlier Ism has great cultural heritage and awesome reputation in earth sciences field (petroleum, mining, mining machinery, geology).

Giving ISM a distinct identity at least in this sphere of industry. Because of these facts, till last year it was pretty unlikely for it to undergo another name change to IIT Dhanbad.

However, after the recent announcement of new IITs and proposal of converting IT-BHU to IIT Varanasi speculation and demands of IIT Dhanbad are back.

To avoid heartburns later, while making a decision kindly assume that you will upon graduation get a degree from ISM University not IIT - Dhanbad



3.HOW come we have not heard about ISM then??

=>
the fact is....PRIVATE COLLEGES LIKE BITS PILANI, VIT DO ENOUGH PUBLICITY VIA MEDIA ABOUT THEIR COLLEGE, IITS GET IT BY DEFAULT......
BUT ISM DOESNT GET MUCH INTO THIS PUBLICITY STUFF......
IT DIDN'T PARTICIPATE IN POLLS CONDUCTED BY MAGAZINES UNTIL 2006 WHEN IT PARTICIPATED IN OUTLOOK RANKINGS.........
IT CAME 12TH in 2006 AND 9TH in 2007...(more on that later...)



4.WHAT about ranking of ISM??
Though outlook has given you 9th rank....india today doesn't mention your name...??

YOU CAN SEE here that ISM has been placed 9th by outlook but nowhere by India Today..
let me first clarify your doubts concerning INDIA TODAY...
u can see in these rankings that..
IIIT ALLAHABAD..is ranked at 8TH POSITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!(is dis a joke or something????)
even BIT MESRA and VIT have been ranked above nsit and even IT-BHU....thats a SHOCK!!!!!!!!!(IT-bhu is way better then IIT guwahati and ISM..)

so my only advice........pls DON’T TRUST INDIA TODAY RANKINGS!!!!!! ......i beg you for this....(if u don’t wanna make a wrong decision at this important juncture of your life!!!!)



5. placements in ISM??

=>
Placements in ISM ARE REALLY VERY GOOD!!
Infact, in PETROLEUM PLACEMENTS are EXCEPTIONAL...

outlook has ranked ism @ 5th position in terms of placements in 2007..

**well let me add to this a fact brought forward by gaurav arora...
this year vikhyaat sir got a job of 44 lacs per annum in petroleum engineering.

BHP billiton is the world's 2nd largest mining company and is recruiting only from ism in INDIA.

Rio tinto is an australian mining company which has started recruiting from INDIA in 2006 i.e. recruiting from ISM...(Maybe in some years it will start recruiting from IIT KHARAGPUR too..)




6.WHY don't companies like yahoo,google come to your campus???
What is the placement scenario of cse,elex??
=>
Well for this you must understand that dhanbad is not a metro..it will take some time for these companies to penetrate india and thus,recruit from ISM campus..
THEY presently dont come to ISM not bcoz ISM lacks good engineers but because of access and location factor..
We are hopeful that these companies will soon start recruiting the best engineers in the country ...by overcoming these initial hurdles..

In 2007,companies like amdocs, accenture, samsung, global logic came for the first time due to the removal of the rule...."software companies must be open to all"

Amdocs was so impressed by the performance of the students that..it raised its initial offer of 3.8 to 4.5 lpa after the interviews.

UPDATE:

As per the information that the student community has Microsoft will be visiting ISM University for sure in 2008.



7.How is the life in ISM dhanbad??

=>
Life is simply great in ISM....
dhanbad has all the amenities a guy needs...(except girls ofcourse....lolzz)

ISM campus life is AWESOME....i dont think i'll be able to describe it here in words.....you better come here and get a FEEL yourself..

We have great senior-junior relationship here in ISM.....(which is the secret of our strong alumni effect..)


Photographic society of ISM screens movies in our awesome lecture-hall complex....almost every weekend..


You won't even realize that you have become a passout.....such is the pace of time here!!!




8.WHAT is the extra-curricular scenario??

=>
ISM is full of these activities specially in the even semester(..i.e. the semester beginning in january!!)
There is hardly any time for serious studies.....once the festive mood sets in...

we have cultural events like..
1.BASANT reunion..
2.PRATIBIMB...inter-department(inter-branch) competition..
3.SRIJAN...our techno-management cum cultural fest
4.Mr. and Miss. fresher


sporting competitions like
1.CALCIO cup...soccer competition.
2.MUQABLA....THE DAY-NIGHT CRICKET TOURNAMENT...
3.Annual sports competition..

4.Athletica...Inter-technical college athletic competition


then we have various other organizations like..
1.GENESIS...which is our budding entrepreneurship cell...its basic aim is to induce entrepreneurship and encourage ISMites to establish their own businesses.

2.KARTAVYA...which is a voluntary organization striving to help the economically deprived section of our society...it runs schools, computer centers, etc....
it also maintains blood group database and hence help the society by providing volunteers for blood donation when the need arises

3.Mailer Daemon…which is our in-campus newsletter for the students by the students.

We also have many ROCK bands from our college called...
1.SALVATION
2.MANTHAN

3.IOTA

And many more.


Photographic society also holds a sort of FILM FESTIVAL every year......where students get a chance to explore a hidden director, actor, editor, lyricist or cameraman in themselves.....movies like...
1.BIRJU BHAI Btech.
2.AN ANECDOTE OF MY FRIEND

3.Crushed

4.Quest etc.
were a huge hit........... in ISM

ISM provides a platform for these and many such other CREATIVE activities..





9.WHAT about GRE or MBA??

=>
ISMITES are studying at various top universities of the world.....
but as far as GRE is concerned it matters a lot on the individual..and his caliber..
though ISM can provide YOU a good foundation....

recommendations by some of the professors of ISM can easily secure admission in most of the top universities..

about MBA...we have many success stories of ismites making to top b-schools...but again that depends a lot on the individual himself...

(...All b-schools aspire to have students of different profiles and thus being from ISM's earth sciences does provide you with some extra weight-age..)

moreover,
ISMites are placed at prestigious positions all over the world...(and being from ISM does help at such places...thanx to great junior-senior relationship).

Q.Isn't it akward "Doing C.S.E,Electronics,Electrical" from a mining college?

=>

No,Not at all.The Indian School Of Mines is not isolated in its capability of issuing degrees to non "earth science" disciplines inspite of the conspicuous presence of the term "MINES" . A stunning similarity is exhibited by The "École des Mines,Paris" or "The School Of MInes,Paris" which dvelves into Engineering and Humanities in addition to The Earth Sciences.For those of you unaware of the credentials of this institute.The École is one of France's most elite schools boasting of some spectacular alumni in the form of High level diplomats,politicians and Nobel Laureates in the spheres of Economics and Physics.It is quite evident that if the International Community has no problem whatsoever in associating itself with such an institute then there is absolutely no scope of your degree being a centre of ridicule.It's also worthwhile noting that The École was set up primarily to serve the Mining industry and It branched into a multi disciplinary institute very later in its history.Such a move was made keeping in mind the technological progress and transformations that have taken place in mordern day society a vision which was shared by I.S.M.U during its own transformation.


So,for all those fellows out there who are being guided by various baseless,illogical and naive arguments--Get up.Get a life.You and especially your friendly neighbourhood counsellor have much to learn before they can even call themselves capable of being able to comment about an institute such as I.S.M

2002 was the yr wen d 1st batch of CSE n ELEX passed out frm ISM, this batch found it very difficult to get job, but once they got into software firms their hardwork showed the character of their alma-matar n now u can see the no. of software companies comin to ISM for recruitment..n all dis in jus 5 yrs time.
